The Hinterland Collection was born from a vision to create extraordinary spaces where nature, luxury, and connection come together. Founded by John and Donna Spedding, the story began with a deep love for the Tweed hinterland—a region rich in beauty, authenticity, and timeless charm.

After more than a decade working in London and travelling the world, John and Donna returned home with their three sons to the essence of what they love most: wide-open spaces, fresh air, and experiences that last a lifetime. Their passion for travel continues to inspire every detail, blending global influences with the unique character of the Tweed. Coming from farming families—John from the Tweed and Donna from Wide Bay—they share a deep understanding of the value of land, sustainability, and community.

John is a fourth-generation local whose family history includes the Burringbar Bakery, banana farms, cattle, and small crops, as well as commercial fishing. His grandfather, Tom O’Connor, served as a Tweed councillor and played a key role in shaping the local community. Donna grew up surrounded by sugar cane, cattle, small crops, a plant nursery, horses, and other farm animals—an upbringing that instilled a lifelong passion for rural land, animals, and nature.

While living in London, Donna received a community award for creating initiatives alongside other locals and environmentalist David Bellamy. She ran community events such as Nature Day and established butterfly gardens and nature projects with children and schools. These efforts were instrumental in changing the status of a local park to a protected village green, ensuring it remained a vital space for generations to enjoy. It’s something she is still incredibly proud of.

The Hinterland Collection reflects these values—connection, sustainability, and creativity—through its portfolio of award-winning wedding venues, boutique accommodation, dining, and future wellness destinations. Each property has been thoughtfully designed with an unwavering commitment to quality and exceptional experiences.

When not curating unforgettable moments, John can be found on the farm or on the golf course, while Donna is usually working on creative projects or spending time with the horses. Together, they love exploring the land, sharing moments with their three boys—who remain their greatest inspiration. Both share a love of travel, always seeking new ideas and experiences to bring home to the hinterland, creating spaces that inspire and connect people from near and far.
